Sleep is Death Now Available

April 21st, 2010 | by GeoffS

So the amazingly unique two-player organic storytelling game Sleep is Death is finally out. I haven’t gotten around to playing it yet but everything I have seen and heard about it sounds very positive. Though to be fair, I think the experience is likely extensively dependent on you and your partner. I don’t usually blockquote entire posts from other blogs, namely because I think it’s tacky, but in this case I’ve decided to yield to the words of the vastly more experienced, Anthony Burch. Be sure to click through his links for tons of details and examples of how the game works.

Jason Rohrer’s Sleep is Death is now available to the general public. You should seriously consider buying it.

I’ve talked it up before (twice), but now’s as good a time as any to check out this improvisational two-player storytelling game. The game’s v14 public release comes with a new set of resources by Shannon Galvin, as well as resource packs for three of Rohrer’s favorite user-submitted stories.

If you’re still unsure about whether or not to buy Sleep is Death, read this. It will change your goddamned life.

So there you have it, go get your story on for $14 which will get you two copies of the game.

“Sleep Is Death” Previews Around the Web

Passage creator Jason Rohrer’s latest upcoming title Sleep is Death is currently being previewed by a number of games media reporters.

Sleep is Death is an interesting game, because it is more so a tool for storytelling between two people than it would be your standard idea of what a game should be.  To help demonstrate that Jason has been conducting sessions as a storyteller, giving each media recipient their very own tailored story.

  • Michael Thompson of IGN got to see a witch-burning.
  • Brandon Boyer of BoingBoing had a trippy dream experience.
  • Anthony Burch of Destructoid tazed a priest.
  • Jason Rohrer himself has a unique slideshow demo of how the game functions.

Besides that, Anthony Burch was also given access to the “controller” tools, where he acted as the storyteller, and played with his girlfriend Ashley Davis.  You can download the entire series of screen-captured events and see for yourself.

Update: Anthony posted a new package containing all three of his stories.  You can get that here.
