Released a few days ago, the developer diary for the upcoming genre smashing Dungeon Defender went up. It gives you a pretty bullet point style listing of many of the features that will be going into the Trendy Entertainment title. I am loving the looks of this game and can’t wait to get my grubby little paws on it for review. The concept of mixing together the action-rpg Diablo style elements with a healthy portion of tower defense is a pretty ambitious union. One would hardly think they’d go together but who knows, maybe it’s the next peanut butter and chocolate. Hit the jump to give it a watch. Keep reading
Cute Things Dying Violently post-mortem goes up, lessons are learned
Alex Jordan, creator of Indie Games Summer Uprising 2011 finalist Cute Things Dying Violently (of which we have a review) has posted a post-mortem on the game. He talks about everything from its history, through its development, on up to the game’s release, success, and the post-mortem standards of what went right and what went wrong.
It’s probably best if you just read it for yourself.
2F XBLIG Update Cast – 007: The Eugenics Edition
Oh man, talk about coming down off a high. Last week we had possibly a record number of rock solid looking titles in our XBLIG Update Cast – 006. This week it’s looking like a total wash, not only was there hardly any good looking games, there wasn’t very many games period. As far as eugenics go, we don’t support the system implemented in 2D Math Panic what so ever. Just because you view someone as unequal doesn’t mean you shouldn’t rescue them with your rocket ship, even if it means losing the game. Now watch as I callously designate a few of the following to be worthy of further inspection. As per the usual these are not full reviews, they are just impressions. Games designated in bold where agreed upon by Brooks and I to be worth a closer look. Games in italics are ones we couldn’t agree on.

‘Adventure Time: My Two Favorite People’ releasing Sept. 27th
Here is the first ever Adventure Time DVD — it’s pretty algebraic if you ask me. The collection consists of a group of episodes selected from the first and second season non-sequentially. Now I don’t fully understand the reasoning behind this, but I’m willing to blame it on stodgy old executives looking to make a money grab by releasing a full season one and two collection at a later time. In any event, I’m counting on you folks to buy this up so I’m sure to get a full season collection later.
Available from Amazon.com on September 27th
Defiant Development’s Warco brings fresh ideas to the stale FPS genre
The truth is I find the fps genre to be one of the least innovative in all of gaming. The prominent series that inhabit the upper echelons of the genre have become as iterative as Madden — that’s as iterative as it gets. That is part of the reason why I am so blown away by Defiant Development’s Warco trailer. The title, Warco is a portmanteau of words “war” and “correspondent” As that implies, the game is centered around capturing the tragedy of war on film rather than participating in it with weaponry — sort of a Pokemon Snap without the abduction. Check out the video below the fold. Keep reading
Review: SkyDrift
Oh the kart racer, whether it be expressed via kart, boat, plane, or motorcycle, it is and always has been one of my favorite genres. But while the racing dynamics are regularly done correctly, it often comes down to how well the weapons, powerups, and tracks are designed that seperate the Mario Kart from the everybody else. SkyDrift from Digital Reality has attacked the genre from the air with a Blur like aesthetic and a HydroThunder like feel.
Gameplay
Even despite it’s lack of actual karts SkyDrift finds itself resting comfortably within the kart racing genre. The formula for the genre is followed to mathematical precision. There are obstacles, powerups, boosts, unlockables, planes with different stats, and even an annoying announcer. But it’s in the implementation and the subtle design differences of these ubiquitous features that define these sorts of games. Keep reading
The letter V eighty-eight times: ‘Pushing Onward’ piano arrangements
Possibly some of my favorite game music ever is from the game VVVVVV. My love for it was only slightly tempered by the 1,200 deaths or so I experienced while listening to it. This particular cover of the song is presented on piano and is intended to be a straight port of the chiptune music. Oh and if you love it, well there is a wave, mp3, and sheet music available on the youtube page of the video. While I am having trouble locating some proper credits for the pianist his youtube alias is UnofficialSoundtrack and he has numerous bad ass piano arrangements for amazing game music. I’ve also included another arrangement of the same Pushing Onward song by Brent Kennedy who took a more dramatic approach to the peice. They are both wonderful and amazing so have a listen below the fold.

Minecraft 1.8 “leaks” out all over the internets
Mojang’s Notch just tweeted that the beans had been spilled, that Minecraft’s Adventure update had been leaked out prematurely. He also mentioned that if you download it that you should be a pal and report any bugs you find. Also, you should feel really terrible about downloading it — for shame. I would suggest you use the host provided by Mojang for this, and just so we are clear, this is an official leak, no ones going to jail I don’t think.

And the Golden Joystick candidates for Best Downloadable Game are
Founded in 1982 the Golden Joystick award is nearly as old as the videogames industry is. It’s the longest running and probably most regarded show in the industry, particularly because its winners are selected by us, the gamers. In this particular category, you’ll find all things exclusively downloadable. While there is a considerable amount of stand out games on this list, I’m pretty sure we all know who’s block head fans will organize and assault this vote with the most ferocity. Let’s just hope the servers don’t melt.
