Tales of Video Game Fails – Episode 2: The Jaguar

Tales of Video Game Fails ep. 2, Atari JaguarIt’s time once again to get old schooled by the Bishop duo. Jesse and Brooks are back again with another episode of ‘Tales of Video Game Fails’ this time around they are touching on Atari’s last hardware hurrah, the Jaguar. As a punk kid, I remember going to the mall and visiting what was effectively a console arcade. The big bad system they had that you didn’t? Well it was the Jaguar and it was just all too easy for them to take my $5 dollars per hour to play Alien vs. Predator. Actually looking back, that was a pretty fucking terrible deal. Nevertheless grab a Coke Zero and pull up a seat for ‘Tales of Video Game Fails: The Jaguar”

Review: Xotic

WXB Games Xotic Review XBLA and SteamIt seems just about every major publisher in the world has a triple-A first person shooter. The reality is it’s a genre dominated by huge franchises dating back in many cases over a decade. But every once and awhile an indie developer will slip on through and take a stab at this highly contested genre. This happens to be the case with WXP Games latest title, Xotic, an FPS with an arcade style scoring twist.

Gameplay

In general, most of the basic mechanics of Xotic fall right in line with what is expected of every standard first person shooter. Movements, control schemes, and even weapon designs are all pretty run of the mill, for example you’ve got your shotgun like weapon, your homing missle style weapon, and even a grenade launcher. They may be called something different and put in the context of bugs but they are what they are. It isn’t until WXP Games stands dissident to the point-and-kill centric genre that things really begin to get interesting. ‘They Bleed Pixels’ bleeds lots of pixels in new bleedy trailer. Bleed.

They Bleed Pixels gets a new trailer

Spooky Squid Games unleashes a new trailer today, showing off all sorts of bloody pixel goodness the depths of which are hard to exaggerated through the use of repetitive instances of the word bleed. Self described “fast-paced, gothic lo-fi, platforming beat’em up that drips, gushes and flows”  They Bleed Pixels looks like its going to be a pretty ridiculous platforming experience. I think I can say with some certainty I’ll be picking this one up this winter on XBLIG. The site for the game also got a revamp, so once youve hit the jump and checked out the video, be sure to stop in and have a look around.

Minecraft server plagued with the Experience Orb Herpes? Here’s a fix.

Experience Orb Bug, Fix, Minecraft,

As soon as the official Adventure Update went live we hopped right on board here at TwoFedoras. We wasted no time in getting the brand new 1.8 server up and running for Brooks and I, a few close friends, and a few new friends from Armless Octopus to start building ridiculous shit and to explore the newest features of the world.

One of the most noted and anticipated features of the update was the ability to level up by killing those pesky monsters that litter the landscape during the dark times. The unfortunate side effect of experience gain is the need for experience loss, in this case that takes the form of dumping all of your collected Experience Orbs. Now lets say Brooks or I happen to be bad asses, and also happen to have hit the level cap, whatever it is. Well that means there is going to be a fuck ton of Experience Orbs all over the place, the result is about a million of the little buggers bogging the server down and giving anyone in the area about 10 frames per minute(not a typo). But don’t start just picking up those orbs willy-nilly, there is a fix! You can have the admin of your server take it offline, and runt his handy little application and restart — good as new.

As for why they’re called the Experience Orb Herpies, well if you happen to try to pick them up the old fashioned way, you’ll be running around with a cloud of those little orbs pictured above, whirling about your person. It does sort of give the impression you’re plagued by something, it may as well be the herps.

Check out a video of the application in action and a link to it after the break. Keep reading

2f Cast – 002: A Minecraft Heavy Edition

Two Fedoras PodcastSo it’s been weeks since we had our last podcast. We really wanted to have more of these but Jesse is sort of a busy guy. So when we found out he had the day off, we quickly postponed our usual Monday XBLIG Update Cast in favor of this highly ramble filled edition of the 2f Cast. Grab a soda and find a comfy chair and have a lengthy listen to Brooks, Jesse and I talk endlessly and perhaps inanely about games.

Hit the jump for the mp3 and embedded versions of the cast! Keep reading

Review: Redd

IGSU Game Review Redd

When you first see the title screen for Redd, you may be confused by the lack of punctuation. I raised an eyebrow as I saw “Redd The Lost Temple” and wondered if this game was literally about playing as a lost temple named Redd. Not since Final Fantasy 8 have I been asked to pilot around a large habitat, but alas it turns out that Redd is not a temple; instead he is an Indiana Jones wannabe, complete with the stupid hat and magnetism for giant rolling boulders. At least there is no Shia LeBeouf…

Redd is a top-down adventure game where you navigate through the dangers and puzzles of a multi-level dungeon. Like most adventure games, you collect coins, keys, and other collectables as you explore. These items unlock further parts of the dungeon or are spent on upgrades to a number of Redd’s items and powers. Things such as faster walking speed, more powerful weapons and extra lives are all available from the in-game shop, although their value and effectiveness varys wildly. Redd’s only real weapons are bundles of dynamite that are limited but slowly regenerate after non-use. The ineffectiveness of this item is quickly apparent as most enemies are constantly moving and the dynamite takes an inordinate amount of time to count down and explode. The bottom line winds up being that this game is much more about avoiding enemies, traps, and dangerous terrain than it is about combat.
