DLC Quest getting ported, nitty gritty gets blogged

DLC Quest Now Available on XBLIG

DLC Quest could be considered a moderate success, by XBLIG standards having sold nearly 20,000 copies at this point, but there’s more than one platform in the net, and we’ve seen time and again that though XBLIG a good entry level launch point, some games have gone on to even greater success on iOS or Steam.

So Ben Kane decided to not only work towards bringing his parody platformer to operating systems, but to log his progress every step of the way. While he’s only in day three, there’s already some interesting things to read from a technological standpoint, and this could possibly end up being a helpful guide to other devs looking to make the leap to iOS, Mac or Linux later on.

Read all about it on Ben Kane’s blog: The Great Porting Adventure

Armless Octocast GOTY edition featuring not one but Two Fedoras

Brooks and I recently had the opportunity to sit down with Mike Wall and Dave Voyles of Armless Octopus and Nate Graves of Gear Fish, for a special GOTY edition of their Armless Octocast. Surprisingly a fair amount of consensus was reached on several games and in the end we all got to pick out our personal favorites.

Head on over to ArmlessOctopus now and have a listen as we struggle to keep Brooks Bishop out of the eggnog.

At long last, La-Mulana?

La Mulana Remake moves back to PC

Although the Wii port of the exploration platformer La-Mulana has been out in Japan since June, the release to English speaking regions has been delayed numerous times. The latest post on the official website reports that despite the fact the game is complete, this may be more political than technical.

So while developer Nigoro have promised that the Wii version will in fact, come out some day, the more exciting news today is that they are taking the enhanced version release to PC! Perhaps Nigoro’s relationship with Nicalis (the company responsible for bringing us the updated versions of Cave Story) and the apparent modern success of Cave Story as a multi-platform game has spurred this change in tactic.

Read more for yourself at the official La-Mulana site.

Here’s hoping to seeing La-Mulana in my Steam account long before the Wii version releases. In other news… what to do with this Wii points card that’s been sitting on my desk waiting to be spent on La-Mulana?

Fez Post-Mortem explains how it’s actually “Cubes all the way down”

The technical genius behind Polytron Corps. puzzle-platformer-cubefest FEZ, Renaud Bédard, gave a talk at the Montreal Independent Games Summit back in November, and posted the slides he used in his presentation.

It isn’t exactly a tech spec or design doc, but there’s still some really interesting information to be gleaned, about both the history of Fez and its technical implications.

Download the presentation file to have a look at The Instruction Limit.

Brand fails peer review, gets better as result

Brand by Nine Dots Studios

XBLIG side scrolling brawler and sword building sim Brand by Nine Dots Studio finally went to peer review recently, only to fail the process on discovery of a bug. That’s what the system is for, after all.

But Nine Dots didn’t just fix the bug and wait out their week. Instead, they used the time to put even more polish on their already fantastic-looking game. Not only did they spruce up their menus and fix up a bunch of other minor issues, they also went ahead and implemented a feature for launch that would have had to wait for a later patch otherwise: Avatar support for the main character.

Read all about it at Nine Dots site.

Justin Smith brings you Realistic Summer Sports

Justin Smith's Realistic Summer Sports Simulator

As video gamers we are, as a matter of principle, highly averse to so called “real” sports, what with all the sweating, and other people, and getting up out of our chairs.

So that’s where Justin Smith’s Realistic Summer Sports Simulator comes in! The iOS game from the creator of Enviro-bear 2010 and So Long Oregon, let’s go find El Dorado has you performing sports events by pulling people and  things around as if on the end of springs. Finally, the thrill of the Summer Olympics without all the off-putting training and whatnot.

Check out the trailer below to see just how ridiculous the whole thing is in practice. And find more about RSSS and Justin’s other games on his website. Keep reading

Ogmo Editor 2 out as beta

Ogmo Editor

Matt Thorson’s tile-based editor app has been an indie dev favorite since its release in April of 2010, and has been widely used in the GameJam circuit to get games up and running with content quickly. And now, version 2 is nearly ready for the masses to get jamming.

While the original was cross-platform from being a Flash app (via Air), the new version is currently windows only, being coded in C# and XNA.

Download the beta (or the original if you so desire) at ogmoeditor.com and check out its own Twitter account for more info @OgmoEditor
