Nippon Ichi Software delivers Cave Story 3D trailer + screenshots

Cave Story 3D Screenshots and Trailer Before and After Nintendo 3DS

Well spelunking fans, which is to say not necessarily Spelunky fans, it looks like the Nintendo 3DS is gaining just a little reason to exist. NIS America just released the trailer for the latest 3DS remake of the popular Daisuke Amaya game Cave Story 3D. Not only that, but there’s a whole lot of screenshots to go along with it. They all kind of look the same to me but perhaps your discerning eye will marvel at the nuanced differences.

The trailer on the other hand does an amazing job showing off the reimagining of the games original 2d elements in completely recreated 3D. I would say that they have accomplished a lot, it would have been exceptionally easy for the games charm and charisma to be washed out by the new fangled technology. Hit the jump and have a gander at all the 3d goodness.  Keep reading

Less than 24 hours remain to pick up the Humble Indie Frozen Synapse “Bundle”

Humble Indie Bundle Frozen Synapse

The latest edition of the Humble Indie Bundle is winding down. If you’ve neglected to chip in what you can and pick up a few indies while doing it, you’ve only got precious few hours left — so you better get your hustle on. Since kicking off in late September the bundle has mustered up over one million dollars for Child’s Play, EFF, some developers, and maybe some spare change for the Humble crew. Additionally, since it started the bundle has tossed Space Chem into the pot and if you still beat the average you’ll take home the Frozenbyte bundle to boot.

Pick it up.

Amanita Design teases me with adorable Botanicula

botanicula Amanita Design Teaser

The creators behind the point and click adventure Machanarium, Amanita Design today released a teaser trailer of their new project Botanicula. A game that features things botanical and things decidedly cula — a suffix I can only assume means “fucking cute.”

Botanicula is point’n'click exploration game created by Jára Plachý and Amanita Design. It’s about a bunch of five friends – little tree creatures who set out for a journey to save the last seed from their home tree which is infested by evil parasites. The original soundtrack and sound effects are created by Czech alternative band DVA. Release of Botanicula is planned for early 2012.

Gajin Games teases new Runner 2, new art style and inspiration

Gajin Games Runner 2

Well this isn’t the usual way of suggesting a follow up to a popular game. Then again it is Gajin Games we are talking about and there is practically nothing usual about them. What we’ve got here is a video featuring a brainstorming session at Gajin HQ with each of the team members making their pitch for the new game. In the end I think we can safely assume we still know absolutely nothing about the new Runner 2 game other than that it probably will exist? Okay that is a slight exaguration we do know a few things about the game, hit the jump to find out what. Keep reading

Two Fedoras Giveaway: Dungeon Defenders

Dungeon Defenders Header Logo with Release Date

We’ve never done a give away before, so here is how this is going to work. The giveaway will be managed on twitter, because Brooks and I both hate logging into facebook — we think Zuck wants our Social Security Numbers. I’ll be sending out an initial tweet which will appear below this paragraph. To enter, you’ll need to follow @twofedoras and retweet the message.

TwoFedoras.com Giveaway: Dungeon Defenders!!! Subscribe AND Retweet this to enter. Ends 10/12/2011. Read More at http://t.co/QELWiCSi
@TwoFedoras
TwoFedoras

The game being given away is a copy of Trendy Entertainment’s Dungeon Defenders. This is a US copy of the Steam game and I have no idea if there are region limitations, so overseas people enter at your own risk. The game is not out yet, but will be releasing on October the 19th. However, we will be ending the event on October 12th at 2:00 P.M. Eastern Time. You’ll still have to wait till the 19th though, since we aren’t magic. We will then randomly select someone who retweeted the above tweet and is following us and is hopefully not a bot. I’ll then make DM contact with the winner and email them the goods.

Please note, this is a copy of Dungeon Defenders I had left over from a 4-Pack Pre-order. It has not been supplied by Trendy and Trendy is not involved beyond being the creator of the game.

Contest is over! Congragulations to Steven Carver for winning! While this contest is over, why follow @twofedoras anyway, and keep an eye out for any promotions we run in the future? Not to mention the awesome game and culture coverage we’ve got here. Just sayin’.

Lil’ Minecraft Monsters by Julia Lichty

Lil Monsters by ghostfire Julia Lichty

Why am I posting these stylized renditions of minecraft monsters? That’s pretty obvious you heartless bastards, because they are freaking adorable. I especially love the sad endermen who’s no doubt apologizing for moving that potted plant off my porch and replacing it with a gravel block — seriously, get off my lawn you lanky emo jerks.  The art comes from deviant artist Julia Lichty who goes by the apparitious alias ghostfire. See the rest of the little monsters below the break. Julia’s work below the fold.

Run backwards and shoot in Serious Sam: The Random Encounters gameplay trailer

Serious Sam The Random Encounter Release Date

That Serious Sam thing is still under way. You know the one where a bunch of indie developers got to use the IP to create retro-esq games. The first one we checked out was Serious Sam: Double D which we gave a heck of a review. Now it’s Vlambeer’s turn with Serious Sam: The Random Encounter a more JRPG take on the seriously not turn-based shooter. Admittedly they come right out and say they know nothing about making JRPG’s while I am sure that is somewhat tongue and cheek, the gameplay just unleashed seems to strongly support the aforementioned statements. What has actually taken shape is some sort of JRPG slightly turnbased shooter….thing. While I may not be able to precisely describe its genre, I can say I think it looks bad ass. The best thing I can do is tell you to hit the break and watch for yourself.

Serious Sam: The Random Encounters will be hitting Steam and other distribution platforms October 24th.

Tales of Video Game Fails – Episode 4: Power Glove

Tales of Video Game Fails: Power Glove

Long ago I received a Power Glove as a gift. I honestly cannot tell you who gave it to me or for what occasion it was for. I just recall getting one. My friends and I would try furiously to get it to work with our games, but never seemed to manage — keep in mind, I was like seven at the time. Eventually I realized that the Power Glove ultimately just looked bad ass was much better at playing pretend as the Hand of Omega. I suppose many people have much the same story, since it ends up a decade or two later as one of our Tales of Video Game Fails. Keep reading

Review: The Binding Of Isaac OST

Review of Danny Baranowsky's The Binding of Isaac sound track

The open narration sent the hairs on my arm standing on end. It was about then, I knew that Danny B’s OST for Edmund McMillen’s ‘The Binding of Isaac’ was going to be something special — the man’s made magic in the past after all. But just how good would this one be, could it possibly even be great?

From the first few notes of track three it was evident that this was a Danny B collection. Although he has proven himself to be quite the musical chameleon, his sound is as unique to him as a fingerprint. Among the various stings and interludes, this 28 track OST has a good amount of stand alone tracks that would easily fit into any given Hollywood movie. The VSTs used are easily recognisable, but Danny B is able to get them to do things that I rarely see desktop composers accomplish. I can only imagine what this musical mad man would be able to create given unlimited resources. Keep reading

How about an Infinity Blade 2 announcement trailer

Infinity Blade 2 Launch Trailer

Yeah that iPhone thing happened, but really here at 2f we don’t care all that much. Ok, Brooks cares, I on the other hand use an HTC EVO 3d that is happily under contract for the next fifteen months of my life. I’ll tell you what we do both care about, and subsequently fills my heart with envy, Infinity Blade 2. Epic decided to go ahead and let the boys of Cupertino announce it during their little Apple thing, and it looks pretty amazing. Have a look below the fold for yourself. Wait, is that some crummy framerate I’m seeing in there? Or is it just shoddy encoding? I guess we’ll have to wait until December 1st to find out for ourselves. Keep reading
