Spelunky Minis belong on my desk

Apparently in the midst of developing the XBLA port of the actiony-randomy-platformy powerhouse Spelunky, Derek Yu and crew had time to whip up a line of plastic figures based on characters and enemies from the game.

No word yet when they’ll be on sale, but you can bet as soon as they are I will lose all willpower to keep my credit card in my wallet where it belongs.

See more at Spelunkyworld.

Daily Fig: Cirno

I admit it. I’m a big Touhou fan. So when a new lady of the bulleted arts is announced, I can’t help but rush to pre-order. Too bad I got in too late to pick up Marisa or Reimu for less than $80 a pop… but some day.

At any rate, the latest release of chibi’d out Touhou girls is everyone’s favorite borderline retarded, frog exploding ice fairy: Cirno.

Bowser figure done right, only set you back $300

As a person who is nearly entirely devoid of any sort of skill or talent, I am endlessly amazed by the people of the internet. Today we have an absolutely incredible Bowser figure crafted from only the finest materials.

Based on a bunny quee platform, this custom Bowser stands 8.5in tall and is ready to reek havoc! This unique stitched leather piece has a hammer accessory and movable arms, wrists, and head. The leather is high quality scrap acquired from a garment company (reduce, reuse, recycle!)

Daily Fig: Stay out of the tulips.

I suppose David the Gnomes life has changed with the world around him over the past several centuries. Times are indeed more dangerous than ever, what with children packing heat now days and all. At least that’s what he says. Personally, I blame the violent video games for the recent militarization of the indigenous gnome population.

These shots were taken by a Mr. Shawn Thorsson and appear on his flickr where there are many more photographs to be seen.

Daily Fig: This week on Swapmeet WTF

So my father is an avid swapmeet goer, and he likes to get cheap, random little gifts for people. This week he apparently picked these up for me from a man who parts out auctioned off storage units. Strangely, they fit in with the rest of the odd ceramic figures sitting on my windowsill.

So what do you think? Are they parent and child? Teacher and student? I like to imagine they’re siblings, and the smaller one is some sort of cartoonish mastermind, commanding his larger brother to handle the physical activities.

Daily Fig: Strength

My Collection of little plastic girls continues to grow. Today’s mail brought along Strength from Black Rock Shooter (the original animation based on a music video of a song inspired by a picture).

The familiar Nendoroid box. Even the packaging is quality.

I have quite the thing for cute, short-haired girls.

I like the new armatures they're including with Nendoroids now, they let you make some nice action shots.

Her little sit-down pose and nonplussed face are so cute, too.

In all, I’d say she’s another great addition to my collection. What first attracted me to the character was the cuteness and short hair juxtaposed with the giant mechanical hands. She’s definitely my favorite of the series. I’m only disappointed that her otherworld persona only appears for a total of about 10 seconds of the entire time. Here’s to hoping they make a full length episodic series out of it so we get more Strength!

Daily Fig: Tiny Model Rooms Strangely Thrill Me

Lately I’ve been researching Victorian style homes for a game I’m working on. Mostly I’ve come across photos from actual homes, the occasional drawing, or video clip of a restoration from some home improvement show. But yesterday I found images from this site that immediately struck me.

These are some example roomboxes from showcaseroomboxes.net, a site which offers highly detailed model era rooms for stores or collectors. Or should I say, offered, as it appears to have been defunct since before 2008. At any rate, there are plenty of fascinating images of Victorian style recreation in scale form to be seen. What amazes me is the amount of detail and variety packed into nothing but the architecture and interior decorating. It’s definitely inspiring me in my own visual work for this game.

Daily Fig: Steampunk Garden Gnome

Calling it the daily fig is actually a joke at this point. I don’t think we’ve had one in months. Chances are you’re either thankful for that or you’ve already forgotten because this gnome is so bad ass. Now when I say “bad ass” I do mean it, but you may want to temper that with the knowledge that I do routinely assume the race of gnome in practically every game that offers such a creature as a playable character. Now these shots, as if the watermarks didn’t entirely give it away, come from one of our favorite figure sources Tomopop. So be sure to swing on by their website and take a good long gander the full set of pictures.
