New 8 Bit Horse breakdown: Metroid 2

My original Game Boy was my constant companion when I was dragged around by my parents to wherever it was they had to be, and it kept me out of trouble. As such, I have some rather fond memories of Metroid 2 as it was one of the titles I was gifted with to hold my attention. And boy did it.

I never quite beat that game, as my young mind wasn’t quite yet fit enough to process the sprawling maps and intricacies of spin-jumping. But that didn’t matter.

It seems the guys of 8Bit Horse share my love of that classic game, and made it the latest in their line of super-involved 2d game breakdowns.

Soak it in, and bask in 2d greatness. via 8 bit horse

Funny thing is… this article marks the first time I had ever played the game. Up to this point, I had played every single Metroid game out there (including Metroid Pinball, which actually ain't half bad), but the sum of my experience with Metroid II came from the intro to Super Metroid, showing the cute little baby metroid hatching and imprinting Samus as its mother.

I figured that there were probably a lot of folks out there who, like me, had missed out on this vital entry in the series, featuring Samus going to the metroid homeworld to eradicate the species. The game is very different from the rest of the Metroid series, which can be both a good and a bad thing, depending on how you view it. Personally, I was surprised at how claustrophobic and atmostpheric the game was… but at the same time, I was trying to un-learn all of the truisms of the Metroid universe that have been lodged in my brain since Super Metroid.

It's an historically important entry in the series, and well worth playing for any Metroid fan. I'm thinking that Kid Icarus II might be fitting for the next full-length entry in the 8 Bit Horse saga. There you go, Two Fedoras fans, a bit of inside info for you. Look for it in July.

Kid Icarus 2 is actually another game I got and carried around with me. That one I actually managed to beat, and was rather proud of myself. I did that long before I ever got my hands on the original NES Kid Icarus. I always loved the fact it alternated between the vertical stages and the explorative dungeon levels with the bosses. Leading to a horizontal world that was completely different.

I love the original Kid Icarus on NES (so much so that I reguarly whistle the main theme around the office), and I did a big write-up for it on 8bh a few months back. I played and beat it back in the day on the NES, but I didn't own a GB back then, so I never played the sequel.

I'm looking forward to getting back in the game with Pit… Oh, and I'm probably going to have to buy a 3DS just for the new Kid Icarus game, so long as they get it right. But hey, they've got an Eggplant Wizard in the trailer… and he looks like he just stepped out of a Captain N cartoon (yeah, that could go either way). Outside of Kirby Epic Yarn, that was the biggest surprise of E3 for me.
