Decidedly Un-Indie ‘Tank Battles’ Announced for XBLIG

Tank Battles is on its way to the XBox LIVE Indie Games marketplace. The game is currently available on the Playstation Network for the not-so-low price of $9.99. But the real news here isn’t that the game is coming to the XBLIG, it’s who’s developing it that is. Gameloft, the developer of the title, is a subsidiary of the distinctly not indie publisher, Ubisoft.

To be honest, I was a little miffed at the whole notion of a big time studio moving in on the XBLIG marketplace. “How dare  you cruel imperial invader?” I shouted at the blurb on Joystiq. The indies have already been more or less muscled out of the XBox LIVE! Arcade with more and more big published games dominating the release schedule. But will this really happen here too? The XBLA and XBLIG really aren’t directly comparable services. The main difference being that there is no release schedule on the XBLIG which provides considerably more slots for games than the one a week the XBLA tries to push out.

So in essence what we have here is a situation, where a big time developer is going to be releasing a title on to XBLIG. Which does nothing but help the XBLIG. In fact, we’ve already begun to see the positive influences of this move, as the service is actually getting some air time on the big boy game news sites and let’s face it the XBLIG could really benefit from an increase in product awareness.
