XBLIG Update: The Old Spice Edition

It looks like we are starting to see all the Old Spice competitors’ games tickle out now. To be honest I’m tired of them already. I do think the competition Old Spice is running, with all that delicious money as prizes, but can’t help but be annoyed by the prospects of paying for an advertisement game. Anyways, we have seven new games for you this Easter Sunday. The descriptions of the games below are those of the developers; our comments will be in bold.

Relativity

Relativity is a god-type strategy/action game, set in a universe which obeys Einstein’s theories of relativity. DON’T PANIC! While Relativity uses some crazy physics concepts you don’t need to understand them to play the game. Hopefully some physics will rub off as you are playing and you can impress* your friends in the pub with phrases like “time dilation”. *Actual level of impressed may vary

Developer: PurpleGames

Price: 240 Microsoft Points

Appears to be a space based god game. It also appears to be fairly complex, or it may just be that I’m feeling overly stuffed with Easter ham and am not understanding much of anything right now. Who knows? The demo didn’t seem long enough to really get much of a feel for the game, so further investigation may be required.

Zombie Square

Use all of the resource available in the town square to fight off the horde.

Developer: TheJKer

Price: 80 Microsoft Points

Yet another twin stick zombie shooting game. This one takes place in a square, hence the title. The square is stuffed with things to pick up and use against the zombies. To be honest, the game doesn’t seem all that interesting.

Tripple

Laid-back and groovy, Tripple is based on the movement of water ripples and color interaction. Players place drops on a variety of liquid fields, creating ripples bearing colored sparkles which interact with each other as they meld. The resulting flashes of light, and their colors, are the goal of this trippy puzzle game.

Developer: Zekhen

Price: 240 Microsoft Points

I really didn’t get this one. Mostly because all I seemed to have to do was mash buttons and stuff happened. I don’t know, maybe the difficulty didn’t approach the “challenge” level of the rest of the game.

Old Spice Racers

Old Spice® Racers brings the return of exciting 2D side scrolling games coupled with local and online multi-player game play. Up to 8 players may compete, via Xbox Live, through 45 stages for racing supremacy. Old Spice® Superpowers provide that extra competitive edge. Ranking boards are shared between network players to create and maintain a thriving online community.

Developer: Monkeytrapgames

Price: 240 Microsoft Points

2D unicycle racing game. Meh, just meh.

Old Spice The Fresh Card Game

Set sail aboard the legendary Old Spice clipper ship to the 4 FRESHEST destinations on earth! From coolest to warmest you will sail by Matterhorn, Denali, Fiji and Cyprus. A Fresh, Fast Paced Card Game where the object is to be the last player still holding an Old Spice Fresh Destination Deodorant, making you the FRESHERSHIST!

Developer: Canned Games

Price: 240 Microsoft Points

It’s just a card game, but I did rather enjoy the games aesthetics and of the Old Spice DBP games I’ve checked out so far it is one of the better games. It is, however, exceptionally hard to justify paying $3 to be advertised to.

Newton Vs. The Horde

Physics Vs Stinky Zombies. Awesome!. Build traps out of random objects, rope and elastic. Use whatever you have. A Bomb, a spear, a fish. Stop the Stinkies from taking freshness from the world. And remember, Old Spice enhances manliness and awesomeness. Apply it to the dude, apply it to the computer, apply it to a bear or just throw it at a monster and laugh when he can’t handle the freshness.

Developer: RB Games

Price: 240 Microsoft Points

This one is another Old Spice DBP entry, the game itself is a physics based puzzler. It plays alright, just kind of the same issue as the above card game, hard to justify the $3 price tag.

Project Delta

In Project Delta you are a pioneering space captain with only a small shuttlecraft and a bit of money to your name, but you have a strong sense of destiny as your journey awaits. – Experience over 60 Weapons, Upgrades and Ships. – Take part in large scale and small scale battles. – Explore the solar system and the asteroid field. – Become a pirate, a trader, a miner or whatever you want…

Developer: Danthekilla

Price: 240 Microsoft Points

This one is pretty interesting, it is sort of an action adeventure/RPG space shooter. I must admit they’ve touched on a few of my favorite things. The demo didn’t seem great with regards to gameplay but I may need to take a closer look.

The Eleventh Doctor Impressions

The new Doctor got the opportunity to strut his stuff this Easter weekend. What did you think? Well we thought plenty. The reality is that Brooks and I, as well as everyone else on the planet, approached this particular regeneration with considerable skepticism — largely because of the unorthadox man love we felt for David Tennant as the 10th Doctor.

All good things must come to an end, and come to an end they did in this past Decembers amazing two part special. But now it’s Spring time, a time for life renewed. And this year the Doctor, the Tardis, and the whole damn show has experienced a bit of a rebirth.

Obviously, the switch of the doctor himself from David Tennant to Matt Smith is thefirst noticeable change, and is the one that is fixated on most. But is it really the most dramatic change that is occurring with the beloved Science Fiction series? I’m not so sure it is. Along with the Doctor’s regeneration, the reigns of the shows writing has been handed over from Russell T. Davies to Steven Moffat. Now to be fair, I will say I don’t know much about Moffat or what his intentions are with the series. I do, however, know the impression the first episode gave me.

The main thing I walked away with after having watched the new episode was a distinctively more retro feel to the show. For starters the Doctor has kicked off his trendy converse kicks and dawned a vintage 1960′s Harris Tweed jacket. Next you’ll notice distinctively more second hand garbage used as parts on the Tardis. Now this is obviously a throw back to the days of yore when the grossly budget strapped Who series creators were relegated to using anything they could as props. That said, I was turned off when I recognized an automobile’s window washing fluid tank sitting prominently atop the console. Lastly, it seems as though Moffat wanted to really drive the retro point home with a montage of past Doctors and their heroic deeds.

Do I even need to go into detail about how lovely the new companion is? I mean really? She is practically delectable. I am curious to see Moffat’s take on the Doctor/Companion relationship and how River Song will work into it all.

To sum it all up, I was pleasantly surprised with how well the first episode went. That may be largely due to the exceptionally low expectations I went into it with. I think the new feel Moffat is giving the series will work out quite well, and that the change in writers and doctors at the same time may have been the best way to have approached this. It makes it a lot easier to set aside the differences of the actors when the whole show is going through a transformation of its own.
